Well, the Little Guy turned 4 in the end of April and this year it was a John Deere Tractor themed birthday party. We hosted it at my in-laws house, which is sort of tucked away from traffic so there were no car slow-downs this year (see the house last year, and the year before).
Once again, I went a little CRAZY with the theme. We had tractor rides, a bounce house, tractor tire cups, a farm field birthday cake, tractor tire cookies, straw bales and John Deere stuff everywhere!
Tractor Wheel cookies were just sugar cookies covered in black candy melts with yellow and black candy melt centers. Very tasty and on theme!
I was pretty proud of the cake this year. It’s the biggest, most labor intensive one I’ve made so far, and it turned out great! You know when you’re imagining something and it turns out like you imagined? Yeah, that’s what happened, and it made me very happy. I found the idea from another tractor party site. She did a 2, so I just tweaked it to work with the number 4. I used a 12×18 cake pan and a triple batch of my chocolate cake recipe.
Lots of yellow and green…even the punch had to be yellow and green! And it is Wisconsin…don’t forget the brandy!
The table centerpieces were just bandanas from a craft store, vases from the dollar store with a tractor sticker I made and burlap ribbon tied in a bow. Easy peasy.
The party favors were tractor tire cups (really just monster truck cups with a new label in the middle I printed on sticker paper) and then little goodie bags of M&Ms and chocolate/vanilla animal crackers…tied up with some twine.
All of the paper products (invites, banner sign, stickers, food labels) were designed and printed by me, so I saved a little money not having to buy those items pre-printed.
At a tractor party, a wagon ride is a must!
And of course, what child’s birthday party would be complete without a giant bounce house? The Little Guy jumped in as soon as it was inflated.
Many of my ideas came from various Google image searches and much too much time on Pinterest. We’ll see what happens next year. I figure I only have another year or two before he decides he just wants to play lazer tag with his friends and eat pizza. *Sigh*
Just curious, where did you find the monster truck cups?
You can order them on Amazon-just type in ‘tractor wheel cups’. She printed off the John Deere picture and glued them onto the cups.

Hi there!!!!!! I am decorating my sons birthday cake similar to the one you made but it’s going to be rectangle shape. Your detail is perfect!!! I did have a question though, where did you find the light brow frosting? Did you have to color white frosting to achieve that color?
His birthday is next weekend, if you could respond at your earliest convenience, I would GREATLY appreciate it.
Heather
Hi Heather! Thanks for the sweet comment! Yes, the frosting was a cool whip/pudding base so it was an off-white color that I used chocolate brown coloring to tint. Happy birthday to your little guy!

Hi!! Such a beautiful cake! I’d like to attempt to make a similar one. Having only made 2 cakes previously, I’ve got lots of learning to do. I was wondering if you’d be able to share with me where you found the fencing, the trees, and the animals? I’ve got some fencing and animals already, but they are way too big. And what did you use to make the dirt/gravel road? Thank you so much!
Hi Cheryl,
I found the fencing, animals and trees at a local baking supply store. The road was toffee sprinkles, also from the local baking store. But you could use ground up graham crackers and oreos and get a similar effect. Best of luck! I’m sure it will be great!

What a wonderful, creative birthday party! I love your ideas!
Aw, thanks Anne! He’s almost 7 now and just wants to play laser tag and eat pizza with his friends, so I’m glad I had a few years to really have fun with themes!

Love the tire cups ! If you don’t mind what size are the John Deere cut outs for the circles in the middle of the cups ?
Good question. It’s been a long time and I think I just measured the circle myself. Maybe 1-1.5″?

How did you make the number 4? What size pans did you use, etc?
I used a 12×18 pan, a triple batch of my chocolate cake recipe and just searched the internet for cake templates for numbers. Cut the template out of construction paper then laid it on top of the cake to cut the pieces to the right size.

I am looking to make the same cake. Did you use the Wilton Cross pan? I was hoping for instructions on how to put this cake together.
I did not use the cross pan. Just a large rectangular pan and then cut pieces using an online guide. If you search “number cakes” online you should find a few website that show how to make numbers out of cake. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/243687029809900137/?lp=true Thanks and good luck!

My great grandson saw this and he couldn’t stop looking at it. He kept asking where his farm was. Thanks for the idea. He might get his farm in November. You did an awesome job with all the decorations!
Aww, thanks! Glad I could be an inspiration for your grandson’s party!
